Abner's brisket is the best for at least 90 miles in any direction - just like they do in Austin, TX! Their ribs (spareribs, not baby backs like Sweet Lucy's) are enormous, meaty, and excellent. The pulled pork is great, and if you like smoked sausage theirs is top notch. The BBQ chicken can be a bit dry in the white meat, though the rest is great. Some of the sides are very good (potato salad, cole slaw, mac & cheese) but others are not outstanding. Sweet Lucy's does a little better with sides and the BBQ chicken, but Abner's brisket blows away everyone else's! The staff is friendly and efficient, and the ambiance is rustic down-home BBQ, but clean and well supplied with sauces, pickles, and hot peppers and other condiments. Their sweet tea is very authentic and good, though I agree that adding lemonade would not hurt. Abner's is always my first choice for barbecue in this neighborhood.

The BBQ is not bad and the portions are large. However, what would really make this place stand out is good side dishes. The collards are mediocre and most of the rest are just bad. Fries would be a welcome addition to the menu (or sweet potato fries). Also, wish they would serve fresh lemonade! These are small changes that would really make this place great. We would go much more often.

I grew up in the South, and Abner's makes excellent BBQ by my standards. They serve all the sauces on the side so you can season as you like. The cornbread and mac-n-cheese are excellent. I strongly encourage you to check out their weekend specials.
