    just like family

This place is the smallest restaurant you'll ever go to, which makes its intimate (as in familiar, not romantic) vibe that much stronger. The food isn't 5-star but the prices are definitely reasonable, they have the best warm, steamy bread in town, and the owner/waiters are excellent and friendly. btw the previous reviewer was a little off, the "lisa" they refer to is actually named "nancy" - just want to clear that up!

    "tonight we do" greatness

i've probably been to over 2 dozen byobs in phil. nowhere has been as consistent or inviting as la baia. from the smoking hot bread to the familial environement with your sitting on top of the next guy's date to jamal's frequently changing, but always perfectly memorized, specials this place is the home of too many memories and delicious food at very fair prices. highly recommend the fungi and eggplant apps. great gnocchi and chicken piccata. don't leave without telling lisa when you'll return.

    Great food at reasonable prices!

Really good portions that taste great and are not overly expensive. A tiny place, so be prepared to squeeze in if it is busy. Service was decent. Oh, and I was under the impression that it was cash only...I am pretty sure that is what their website says too.

    Always excellent!

Great food, great value, very consistent. Not much ambiance, but the food makes up for it.

    great Italian food

A marvelous little neighborhood find, La Baia is a BYOB, cash-only gem with wonderful food. The mussels in white wine sauce provided a large portion with garlic, herbs, and a hint of zing. The salmon encrusted with walnuts was very nicely cooked with a rich sauce that matched it well. Even the bread was top-notch. A quiet place with smallish tables, this could be a great part of a romantic evening. Presumably because they don't sell alcohol, the prices are very reasonable.

my go to restaurant in philly

I have been to this place at least 20 times. The food is always fresh, plentiful, and delicious, and best of all, consistent. Its a small BYOB and is cozy and comfortable. Portion sizes are large and I almost always take some home (dependingon how much wime I drank). Totally reasonable prices. Highly recommend it.

    poor service

Service was unfriendly from the minute we walked in. We were meeting friends who had been holding a table for us. Granted we were running a bit late, but there was no one else waiting so we really didn't think it was necessary to treat us like criminals. The restaurant is so crowded that one has hardly room to breath. When the lady who would later serve us was standing by the door, my friend could not get up to go to the bathroom. I asked her politely if she could move to the side so my friend could go use the restroom, she told me in a very rude voice to "just wait" (not sure what she was doing...). We were also told that we would have to vacate the table in 45 min (although it turned out no one had reserved our table) We were later joined by two other friends who did not eat an entree (but four of us ordered appetizer, entree, dessert and coffee, spending over $30 per person), but at no point in the process did they have to make anyone wait on a table or turn anyone away because we were "taking up" their precious seats. I suppose this was still enough reason for them to categorize us as customers who came to take advantage of their restaurant. Our candle at the table was never lit, and every one of our dishes was served with a good dose of contempt. When the bill came, we were quite surprised to find corking charges and roughly 20% gratuity added to our bill (neither was mentioned anywhere on the menu or by our server). When we politely inquired about these charges, we were told by by the restaurant owner that he had been in the restaurant business for over 20 years and that we were not in a position to tell him what to do. Food was decent but by far did not offset even a fraction of the subpar service experience.
