Meh
I made reservations but had to walk out after about 20-30 minutes of not being seated, and not even being comped drinks or anything. So the atmosphere (unwelcoming) and service (pococurante) get very low marks. On the bright side, delivery (via SeamlessWeb) is reasonably quick. But the food is hit or miss. I usually get a few rolls and the crab dumplings and the calamari salad. Sometimes they're near-sublime. Other times only so-so. (NB: If you request seaweed on the outside of your maki, they won't oblige. All delivered rolls, at least, come with rice on the outside.) As for the prices, they aren't outrageous per se, but do flirt with the ridiculous on some items. All in all, if you live east of Broad, you could do worse.

best sushi rolls.
haru has the best specialty and regular rolls in philly. The fish is always fresh, the staff is always friendly, attentive and english speaking. Good for a cheap quality meal out or an expensive date, the large menu offers flexibility and variety. Nicer than most of thier new york spots and anything in philly.

Good sushi, surprising entrees.
My girlfriend and I arrived at Haru on a Sunday night and were seated immediately at our reservation time. The place was fairly dead, though. Appetizers included O-Toro, Yellowtail Scallion roll, and crispy duck. The O-Toro was soft and tasty, the YT roll was fresh and prepared nicely, and the duck was delicious. My only complaint here was that the O-Toro was a lot more expensive than even most expensive sushi places. However, the YT roll was less expensive and was as good as most of the higher end places in the city. The duck was simply superb...perfectly cooked and seasoned. The saketini, at $10, was overpriced but pretty tasty. I prefer sake with my sushi, so I tried to be adventurous. I don't think I'd recommend coming to Haru to drink though, at least not at these prices. Continental has similar prices but a far hipper scene. The entrees were the real winners though. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly, even though the vegetables were overdone. The duck was, like the appetizer, cooked to fall-off-the-bone perfection in a plum hoisin sauce. It was served with two spring rolls and a tempura "mess" of onions and carrots that was purely decorative. The waitress was not friendly but she was attentive. The person that brought our meals was quite friendly. The interior is quite nice. House music plays at a medium volume and there are high ceilings. The seating is extremely comfortable. Overall, I found Haru to be slightly overpriced but worth the trip. The sushi was as good as many of the higher-end sushi restaurants in Philly, some of it at a lower price (especially considering the portions at Haru are far larger than most places).

Overrated...
Great atmosphere, but there are several better Sushi restaurants within a short walk of Haru.

Awesome food and value
Haru is clearly the best sushi spot in Philly right now. The service was professional but casual, the fish was fresh and the portions are big. Good value for the money. Nice sake list too.

New York Asian Esthetic in Philadelphia
There's a reason some chain restaurants are popular - Consistency! Haru dekivers on several fronts. The pared down luxe ex bank lobby, and hot and/or sushi offerings that are intriguing flavor notes. Well worth a visit.

Tasty Sushi
I thought Haru had tasty, good quality sushi. The price is average to slightly expansive, but the fish was good quality and we had no difficulty substituting different fish that what was offered with the combos. I think you get what you pay for with sushi, and in general my experience with cheap sushi has been negative. Our waitress was friendly and attentive and I really had no compliants. I haven't tried a lot of places in old city but I thought the sushi was very good.
