Mediocre Seafood Joint that Should Be Better

We've been to Kelly's numerous times over the years, mainly because we live in the Northeast and it's convenient. It used to be gawd awful, then it seemed to get better and we really liked it for awhile, and now it's downright awful again. Not sure if it's because of kitchen staff changes or food purveyor changes or just bad supervision, but it's a Jekyll & Hyde type restaurant. My dinner of choice usually is the fried seafood combo, a dish that for me epitomizes the classic neighborhood seafood joint. At Kelly's, this dish has ranged from excellent to very mediocre, and I kind of never know what to expect on any given evening. My wife tends to order scallops, and they used to be very good & very plentiful, but lately they've been worse than mediocre to the point of being tough & overcooked & nearly inedible. Plus, much smaller portions than a couple of years ago. One thing Kelly's has always done well is their snapper soup, and I'd stop in for that alone, along with a plate of oyster crackers & some horseradish. Another negative is that the side dishes, which have always been decent diner-type items like mashed potatoes & cole slaw & apple sauce, have gotten much smaller than they used to be. If a restaurant wants to economize, it makes no sense to cut down on the size of the side dishes. Finally, a word about the service. It's usually good, though uninspired. The typical server is on the ball, but once or twice we've gotten a server who forgets to bring out something we've ordered. Weird, but a couple of times it's happened. The bottom line at Kelly's is that it can be good, but lately, not so much. I can't quite recommend it any more, even though I often yearn for really good seafood in the restaurant wasteland known as Northeast Philly.

    Meh

Old school seafood house. No imigination to the menu. Broil or fry everything then add paprika. It used to be better. Pleasent waite staff.

    Not Very Good

While the others at my table said they liked their dishes, I didn't like my combo dinner one bit. House salad had wet lettuce and one tablespoon of blue cheese dressing that tasted funny. Crab cake was gooey, indicating lots of filler. Shrimp scampi had four off-tasting shrimp swimming in a sea of oil. Mac and cheese was light on cheese flavor and about 1/5th as good as Stouffer's frozen. Stewed tomatoes was more like tomato gumbo (with chunks of celery for some reason). Chocolate mousse was some sort of phony whipped cream plus cocoa. I won't return.

    Really Subpar

This as my 4th or 5th trip to Kelly's. With each eperience the service and food gets worse. There were 3 adults and 1 (7yr. old child) in our party. The child was given a regular menu. Aftter 10 Minutes I requested a children's menu. One of us ordered the ribs and crabcake combo. Totally inedible. The ribs were pure gristle. INSTANT mashed potatoes. ? Why? also the potato salad was NOT good. Have learned now to not go there again but just wish that the owners would take the time to read some of these comments and do something about it.

I agree "use to be good"!

I have been going to Kelly's for years. I have noticed a change over the last couple years. It's a shame. This was a landmark here in the northeast for years. I was going to take my sister for her 60th birthday. Thought maybe it was just me who thought things have changed. I guess not. I will find somewhere else. I wish the owners would just get a new chef or bring back the old one.

    Consistantly Lousy

If nothing else, Kelly's is consistant. Lousy food & lousy servive. My wife & I went to Kelly's to satisfy her craving for seafood. Even though we're in our early 60's I think we were the youngest diners in the place. My wife's meal, other than a soggy salad was decent. Mine however, was awful. I ordered the sirloin steak & a baked potato w/butter. What I got was a slab of fat & gristle masquerading as steak & the tiniest baked potato I ever saw, with of course, no butter. I was almost finished by the time our air head waitress got around to bringing me some. It was the worst piece of steak I've ever had in a restaurant. When we were ready to leave air head waitress brings us someone else's check. We finally had to track her down to get the right check. You couldn't pay me to go back to Kelly's.

    Should have trusted previous reviews

Well should have believed the previous reviews. Went her tonight and all was true, waited almost 45 minutes for food to show up and we got the all u can eat crab legs, they were tasteless and over cooked and rather small for 37$ we also were told when we asked about the wait on the crab legs that in order to request a refill on the crab legs our plate had to be cleared or down to a few legs. Took us hours to eat another one of us got a grilled chicken salad where the chicken was overlooked and hard. So dissapointed in this place definitely our first and last time. Go to hilltop crab house for good crabs and crab legs!
