Kite and Key
Posted by philly eater on 05/14/2009
My girlfriend and I stumbled upon “Kite And Key” on the way to whole foods in the art museum area and decided to stop in to check it out. The outside looks nice: good façade and a few tables for outside dining. The inside is nice enough; there are a few TVs on the wall if you want to catch the game. Alas, we were there for a quick bite. To say 'aweful' would be incorrect. There was nothing BAD about the food. Then again, there was nothing good about it either. We decided to split an order of edamame, fried calamari and a burger. Everything was tasteless. The breading on the calamari was corn-meal ... and tasted like that's all it was. Not salt, not pepper... hell not even grease. There certainly wasn't any calamari flavor to speak of. *laugh* The dipping sauce at least gave it SOMETHING for the palette. The edamame was the best part of the meal, but lacked the usual amount of salt. I will say, though, that it was cooked well... so this was CLOSE to acceptable. Please note: I don't usually salt my food... so i'm not a salt-freak who thinks that everything must be salty to have a flavor. Moving onto the burger; WOW... it was completely uneventful. I'm pretty sure the burger was just made from ground beef, a LOT of bread crumbs and some egg to hold it together. ZERO flavor. (unless we dipped in the calamari dipping sauce – this became the ongoing joke throughout the meal: ‘Everything in the bar should be served with calamari dipping sauce since it’s the only thing that had any flavor.’) The roll that held the burger LOOKED good, but was just chewy and flavorless. EVEN THE PICKLE was off. Limp and devoid of flavor. How ODD! We couldn’t wait to leave so we could drive to whole foods and find something to restore our tastebuds. For a while there I wondered if I had a cold that was screwing with my sense of taste. But whole Foods confirmed that it wasn’t my health and that the the food at this place was as lifeless and uninspired as the 'crowd' sitting at the bar staring at the tv screens. If in the art museum area… pray that high-winds will sail your kite elsewhere.

The food was bland and did not seem fresh. The biggest disappointment was the burger - it tasted like any frozen kind you can pick up from the local market. The roll was also chewy. We were sadly disappointed by the food.

The food was average...nothing special. Could have a little more variety on the menu. The service was excellent and staff were very friendly. Good selection of beers.

I tried this place out and it is nothing special. There are much better places in the area and the food was quite bland. I had the wings and was unimpressed The servers were not very helpful or friendly. Not worth going back to when there are so many good places in the neighborhood.

I really enjoy going to Kite and Key for a baseball game and some fish tacos. The food is always fresh and tasty. The staff is always friendly, and the beer guys from across the street are always there, too! I love the Kite and Key. I have to say that my business goes here, instead of London! There is also a wide range of beers, and a full bar.
