    Not so good AT ALL!

Food is below average..We had undercooked shrimp and overcooked salmon in one dish! Probably salmon was cooked way ahead of time and shrimp were frozen?...Calamari were very chewy so as veal... And their service deserves a separate comment! Omg! One of their guys actually tapped my girlfriend on the shoulder while taking her order! Never again! There are way better places in Philly. Don't spoil your night with bad experience that can be avoided P.S. I honestly hope that it was just one bad day for the restaurant because all the reviews I read before were pretty nice.

    fantastic trattoria style food

I had a great experience at La Viola with a bachelorette party a few months ago. The food was fantastic and reminded me a lot of the delicious homemade pasta I had in trattoria's all over Italy! As far as the reviews complaining about the small portions, maybe you should just stick to the gluttonous portions and cheap faux italian food at the olive garden :) Any restaurant using quality ingredients and making pasta fresh is going to give smaller portions. My only complaint is that when the place fills up, the acoustics are terrible. We had to scream across the table to hear one another and the tables are very close together. Overall, I loved it and I can't wait to go back!

    Perfect for a Birthday Celebration!

This wast first time at La Viola and I wasn't sure what to expect. I have heard good things , but I never thought they were going to be as good as they were. We had a group of 15...we didn't wait for a table and were even accommodated when we had to move inside because of the rain. The staff was more than attentive. They were outstanding!! The food was delicious and the prices were great. I would hightly recommend this establishment

    overture to a pleasant afternoon

Good food, good service A nice way to enjoy an afternoon before going to Kimmel center Last week after a well prepared and well presented lunch we headed for the concert and realzied our tickets were missing.I started rushing back to reastaurant and was met by the waiter running down the street waving the envelope in his hand That extra gesture was so much appreciated That added to the pleasure of the afternoon

    Don't get the gnocchi.

I ordered the spinach ricotta gnocchi. This dish was pretty lame--it was VERY small for such a high price. Honestly, you'd pay that much for an entree at Olive Garden and you'd get 3x time amount and it would taste better. The gnocchi was green and tasteless, and there were just 3 tiny cubes of ricotta cheese on top with a scant amount of sauce. I don't expect huge portions, but even this was skimping. I wouldn't eat there again because it's a horrible value. Also--beware if you want separate checks...they apparently "can't do that" even though they figure all the checks by hand. Go figure, because it looked to me that the real reason was because the hostess didn't feel like doing the extra work instead of playing on her iPhone.

Having eaten at La Viola many times my guests and I were eagerly looking forward to an enjoyable meal last Saturday. Well... We arrived at 7:50 for an 8:00 reservation and joined a crowd of about 12 people who were waiting for their reservations. I immediately asked to young woman who was managing the seating how long the wait might be. She told me there were a number of tables that would soon be available and that we could expect our table in 10-15 minutes. 30 minutes later we were still waiting. Fast forward to 9:15 when we finally got seated at a makeshift table they arranged to accommodate the overflow crowd. Unfortunately the tabled was crammed against a wall between another table and the narrow aisle through which the waitstaff had to navigate. Long story short: The food was fair at best. The noise level was quite excessive. The seating was cramped to the point of being uncomfortable. And the icing on the cake: there was no acknowledgement or apology whatsoever from La Viola management about the long overdue seating. Bottom line: Avoid this place on weekends. Try early in the week when the pressure for seating is lighter.

    Long Wait

My friends were in town for the weekend and we had reservations for 9:15.... an hour later we were seated. The one waiter was pouring water over my chair and spilled it all over my back. Another server was setting the table next to us and dropped a knife which hit me and then landed on the floor. It was picked up and placed on the table that was being set. To top it all off on the way to the bathroom a different waiter handed me a slip of paper with an order on it and said can you put this in the window on your way to the bathroom, thanks. This is no joke. Food was delicious but that doesn't make up for my experience. Thankfully I was in good company who shared many a laugh with me about it later.
