La Viola East

To celebrate a friend's upcoming wedding, a group of took to her to dinner at La Viola. We had reservations for 8 or 9 people at 6pm. 3 of us arrived at 5:50 and were told the reservation was supposed to be for 5pm (the time we all get off work!) We then were told they only had set a table for 8, and that there would be a problem if we were 9 (we were 8). The hostess was rude, and then kept eyeing our table and whispering to the 4 servers all just standing around at the entrance. Our party arrived one by one, and with each arrival, we were rudely asked by a server "when will everyone else be here?" We decided to order appetizers while waiting for the last 2 people to arrive, and the server then quipped" where is the girl that was sitting there", while one of us was in the bathroom! He was reluctant to place the order for the apps, but did. When we all were settled in, we were rushed to order dinner, making us all think the whole meal would be rushed. Fortunately, it was not, and the food was quite good. But, the attitudes presented by the hostess and servers make this a place I will never frequent again.

La Viola is my stand-by when I want good food at a good value. I always love what I eat, and I'm always impressed by the wait staff. My favorite wait person is the little man who reads the specials at La Viola West - he's always so sweet. The spaces are definitely small and of course the restaurants (both La Viola and La Viola West) get packed on the weekends, so I usually end up going during the week. Or if I really want the food on the weekend, I'll just order it to go. Some of my favorites are the mushroom appetizer, penne alla caruso, the spaghetti with shrimp and truffle oil, lobster ravioli, or whatever they have as the pasta special. I do think that La Viola West has a slightly better menu, but if you know the menus, you can usually get whatever you want at either of the restaurants. If you haven't tried La Viola yet, you should!

I just finished dinner at La Viola...It was a fantastic one. The food was extremely delicious and the chef deserved lots of congrats. The waiters were very keen on details..We were 5 people and all of us enjoyed the time spent there. I would definitely recommend it to my other friends.

This was my first experience at your restaurant and it was a most disappointing one. I felt the hostess definitely had an attitude. We did arrive 15 to 20 minutes late but did to call to inform them. Our table was so small you had to juggle your silverware and the bread basket was on the window sill. We never should have been seated where we were (we were a party of 7) since we definitely had no elbow room. I actually felt sorry for the party of 4 at the table next to us since I felt I was practically sitting with them. I don't think I will return.

We have been to La Viola many times and chose it for a very special occasion for our party of 7. We did arrive 15 min. late for our 8:00 reserv. but did call ahead to alert them. Upon arrival we were told there were a few tables on dessert and we would be seated when they left. No problem, we have worked in the restaurant business and understand this type of situation. The waiting area was packed! A young lady came in at 8:40 to announce her party of 9 was there for their 8:30 reserv. At 8:50 the party of 9 was seated! We were less than pleased! They offered us a table by the window - great! Unfortunately it was a table for 4 with 7 chairs squeezed around that spilled into the waiting area. Every time someone left or entered the restaurant, the person at that corner of the table got knocked in the shoulder! The food was delicious, but we had to balance plates on top of our water glasses and in the window sill because there was not enough room on the table for 4 for service for 7! We spoke to the hostess numerous times , but she held strong to her opinion that she did the right thing with a half-hearted apology. In the past we have told anyone that would listen that this is the best restaurant/value in all of Phila. NOT ANYMORE! Shame on you!!!

Ok food but we were seated in the same room as a rehearsal dinner without warning. Loud and a bit uncomfortable. We complained and nothing happened. Food was ok but didn't make up for the awkward experience. Many BYOBs to choose from, I won't go back.

We were visiting from out of town and selected this restaurant from online reviews. We loved it. The food was really great and the atmosphere was cool. I grew up in South Philadelphia, but I never had restaurant food that good back then. La Viola rocks.
