My favorite restaurant in Philadelphia! Or at least one of my top top top. I've been here several times, and always thought the food was wonderful - delicious and interesting - not the usual Philly BYO Italian fare (not to cast aspersions on the usual Philly BYO fare, but the food here is really much more innovative and interesting). We have always ordered the tasting menu - what a great value - $40 for 4 courses, and even though each course is a little bit smaller (maybe) than a usual course, its LOTS of food (I'm a hungry man and often leave hungry from a restaurant that serves delicious but precious food; I've always left Monsu fully satisfied). On our most recent visit with a group of 6, two things stood out. The food has gotten even better! Everything was wonderful - from the traditional calamari, octopus, fish, veal, etc to the more adventurous or less usual snails, frogs legs, lasagne with fried egg, etc. No matter how traditional, everything had something to make it interesting and out of the ordinary. I could go through each item, but you CANNOT GO WRONG here - everything was wonderful (6 people x 4 courses = 24 items, each one great)! Secondly, there was a mixup with our reservation . . . but I don't even have a complaint. Yes, I could whine about a lost reservation - but that is something that can happen anywhere (that's why I like when restaurants use Open Table - I have an email confirmation). The staff at Monsu was so apologetic and made such an effort to make things right for our party, that I can't say anything other than this lost reservation makes me EVEN MORE likely to return (and I already have my return reservation - this time with a group even larger). The did find a way to fit us in (later than we wanted), provided wine for us while waiting (even though of course we had brought plenty of our own), gave us several appetizers on the house as a show of good will (which we hardly needed with the generous portions). I particularly credit the chef Adam who came out to greet, apologize and check on us periodically, and made it his personal responsibility to make sure every step of the way that we were enjoying ourselves. So from 6 grumbly people to start with, we ended up 6 sated, very satisfied, very happy people eager for our next visit. This place really is a gem!

My husband and I are neighborhood fans of Monsu for a more than a year now, and we just had ANOTHER perfect meal! When you dine frequently at an establishment, it can be hard to separate the overall experience from the food...well, it's safe to say that tonight, after having the always impeccable service and a truly MEMORABLE meal, that we're sure that the food is the star! We shared grilled sardines, gnocchi , and the stuffed swordfish. The food was perfect - sardines were moist, accompanying salad was the perfect complement; the gnocchi were (as always) feathery light not over or under done with blush sauce and crabmeat; the swordfish was unlike anything I've ever had - unique in the best way and a riff on fish that was totally new to us both!! We sat outside, chatted w our table neighbors, and had a most delicious night! This place is a gem. The flavors are strong, unique and distinct. The staff is courteous, accommodating and professional. Monsu is an absolute must!

My husband and I were in town on the way back from the OBX. We asked at a local cheese shop where we could go locally for a deliscious reasonably priced Italian meal I had the salad (which I hope to get a recipe for the dressing),,mussels, ribbon pasta, with artichoke hearts, my husband had the pork we both had dessert(outstanding)I had the flourless chocolate torte with salted caramel,my husband had the cannolli. The service was impeccable, the waitress was very knowledgable about the menu and did an excellent job of explaining the dishes to us laymen. It is BYOB and cash only. We will definitely be back when we visit our son again.

Highly recommended by locals but greatly disappointed! Food was flavorless except for salt! Not many choices, one salad? Sicilian food has been a good experience in Baltimore, New Jersey and Sicily so I have sampled the best! Not here , very sad! I must say the flour less tart was good! So disappointed!

Many restaurants have excellent food. Some have good service, as well. A very few seem willing to take the time to make sure someone with significant food allergies/intolerance can eat safely. Mondu manages all of these beautifully. My son and I enjoyed a truly delicious meal here. I have celiac disease (gluten intolerance) and the waiter and the kitchen were fabulous in accommodating me without leaving me feeling like I had been deprived in any way. The appetizer with snails was so delicious, we considered licking the bowl it came in. The flourless chocolate tart was rich and decadent without being unpleasantly heavy, as these can be. Everything in between was every bit as good. I can't say enough about the kindness of the staff, from the hostess who managed to slip us in due to a cancellation to the wait staff who were careful to separate our gluten- and non-gluten food. Highly recommended. I hope you enjoy your meal as much as we did; we'll definitely be back.

On the corner of 9th and Christian, in the thick of the Italian Market, this new Sicilian restaurant is a welcome addition to the area. Open for brunch 11-2 and dinner 5-10, the friendly staff and great food are terrific. The table got housemade foccacia with olive oil and delicious ricotta cheese -- wonderful! We had gnocchi and an omelet. Both were delicious. We were too full to try any of the desserts, but we'll definitely be back. BYO, Cash Only.
