    Not what I expected

My cousin flew in from out of town and she kept raving about Ms. Tootsie's. She said a coworker had told her that the place was awesome and since she's going to Philly, check it out. Well, we checked it out and i have never been so disappointed. The ambiance was wonderful BUT the place was so tiny you could not possibly have more than 40 people there! I ordered from the menu and unfortunately the items i ordered were NOT AVAILABLE. The waitress asked me if i would like something else, and i said no thank you, i will take some water. The waitress said well you have to eat, what would you like? I told her that water would be fine b/c what i wanted was not available. The waitress said okay, went to the back, and bought out a HUGE fruit salad for me (on the house). I was grateful that she did that and that's why the service was a 5. I left her a huge tip for her delightful service.

    Good Soul Food

My husband and I went to Ms. Tootsie's for our anniversary. Although the place is small, what do you expect on South Street, the atmosphere was good but loud. Our food was GREAT! Many soul food restaurants have tasteless food but Ms. Tootsie's had amazing food and great service. There was so much food that I had to take half home with me and ate it for lunch the next day. The desert-sweet potatoe cheese cake and lemon pound cake, were both actually better than our dinner. Some people complain about the ice tea but I found it quite tasty and the watermelon wedge is a great touch. Expanding the restaurant would be a great idea because it is a very tight fit.

Great Place to Eat Small but Nice

I have been there several times and it was always a great experience. The food is superb. It is a little pricey but you get what you pay for. They used to charge extra for the corn bread but I think that has changed. The ice tea is banging! The service was great it is just a little tight. You kind of feel like your eating next to everyone in the restaurant.

    Poor Customer Service

My husband and I visited Ms. Tootsie's on yesterday evening (6/30/09). We both had a taste for some good soul food, and having been to the restaurant on many other occasions, we were very satisfied with the food, but not the service. When we arrived, there were several tables available in the center aisle; however, we waited at the door for about 5 minutes before anyone came to seat us. After we were seated in the center aisle, we noticed that no one was eating food, just cornbread and drinking their beverages. Anyway, we sat for about 10 minutes before a server came over to greet us and take our order. We waited another 15 minutes for her to bring our beverages, and another 10 minutes for our cornbread. While we were waiting for our food, we noticed there was a party upstairs, and the people were rude, loud and continually bumping into our table. At one point, one of the servers, who kept going back and forth outside, bumped into our table knocking my silverware on the floor, never apologized, and never replaced it. Needless to say, we wait for almost an hour or more for our food, only to find out that other customers had been waiting longer than we had been for their food. My husband asked to speak to the manager, and one of the servers told him that he was upstairs, and he would get him. The manager never came downstairs, and when my husband went upstairs, there was no one up there. After sitting there for another 3 minutes, we decided to leave. My husband asked for the check to pay for our beverages, and the server gives us the check for the full amount, charging us for the meal. When we asked her what was this? She said, you asked for the check. My husband said, I asked you for the check to pay for our beverages only, and that we were leaving, because of the poor service in this place. We actually stood up by our table and waited another 5 minutes for our servers to come back, and she never did about the check. Finally, we left along with several other customers. I have never experienced anything like this at Ms. Tootsie's. First of all, the place is entirely too small - it needs to be expanded. The staff was so busy conentrated on the party upstairs, they forgot all about their patrons in the restaurant.

    Our experience

My husband had been wanting soul food for about two weeks now and since Ms. Tootsie's is the only one in the City, we decided to go on 1/4/09. We arrived at 4:15 p.m., were seated at 4:20 p.m., greeted by hostess and served iced tea. Hostess came to get our order. We placed our order. I wanted a side order of potato salad and was told they were out. My husband wanted a green salad and we were told they were out of salad. About 20 minutes later, the hostess asked us if we wanted to wait for our greens because they ran out. We agreed. Five minutes later, the hostess returned to advise me that the whiting I had ordered was no longer available and would I like something else. She was very upset because they waited to tell her that they ran out of fish. I was also disappointed. We ended up leaving. The Hostess apologized. And we told her it wasn't her fault and the restaurant should know better. This is not the first time this has happened to us. But it's a shame that the only soul food restaurant in the City could run out of food at 4 p.m. on a Sunday. Most church people go to restuarants after church and I know they go to 3801 on Sundays for their brunch. And when they do have a full menu, their food is pretty good.

    A Waste of Money

12/20/08 was my first time going to Ms. Tootsie's Cafe. I have heard friends and co-workers rave about how good Ms. Tootsie's food was. I was soooo disappointed. The service was good. I did not like the atmosphere because it was too small and dark. Then to top if off they sat my friend and I next to the bathroom! The food came out too quick and you can tell that it was pre-cooked and warmed up. The greens were subpar the mac and cheese was unappetizing not to mention it was made it Velveeta cheese. The whiting was tasteless, but the hot sauce fixed that. The corn bread was dry and too thick. And the famous house ice tea is nothing but ice tea mix!! I can not see how they were rated one of the best places to eat in Philadelphia?!
