Wouldn't go back on someone else's dime!

While the atmosphere was pleasant and relaxing for the most part, the food was overcooked and did not mirror the menu description. Moreover, the service was poor. The oxtail entree was supposed to have come with butter beans (emphasizing the plural of bean), so I was surprised to find a grand total of 1 bean on my plate. The rice and peas was dry and tasteless, and there wasn't enough gravy from the oxtails to saturate it and improve the flavor. The plantains were extremely overcooked, dry, and just hard and seemed to have been left over from a previous night. My party and I waited 30 minutes for our food, and the waiter, who in all fairness was new, had to be reminded of our beverage orders three times, only to later tell us that they did not have what we had ordered. When we requested the bill, which we intended to pay in part with a $25 dining certificate purchased from a well known and widely used dining website, the manager initially refused to honor the entire certificate amount and instead offered to redeem the purchased certificate (quite different from a printed free coupon which she mistakenly assumed and argued with me that it was) for $10. After a short debate, she relented and redeemed the certificate for the full purchase amount. There was a birthday party being held on the 2nd floor and amazingly, the sound system was the same for both floors, which meant that when one of the party attendants used the microphone to extend personal birthday wishes and sentiments, everyone on the first floor got to hear it as well. The ceiling and light fixtures literally shook when the party attendants did the Cha-Cha and Electric slide. I'd been looking forward to trying this restaurant for quite some time, however, after my experience, I would not return even if someone else was paying the bill.

    Changing

This is my third time at the Reef and I must admit the first time was poor, service was slow, food was slow, however some friends talked me in to coming again. The second time was better food was outstanding and this last time it was a wonderful dining expereince. I can see they have a new staff and it is a great change. They say Third times a charm!

    Not good

I am so glad i did not go with any Jamicains because they would of had a fit. The Jerk Chicken was barly edible and the quailty of meat was poor, rice overcooked the beans were not even right. The waitress came out with the wrong order and was not really paying attention...the only good thing i can say is the door hosts were very pleasant.

    Carribean food and vacation atmosphere

Step into a vacation, sip on tropical drinks and listen to Carribean beats while you enjoy Jamaican eats. Happy hour specials take you into the evening dance party. The upstairs lounge is so beautiful it could possibly be the best atmosphere in South Philly. Upscale but not stuffy, this place has an open, free and breezy feeling. Check out the rum punch and Alumni Fridays for a great time!
