Great New Addition to the Middle East Fare of South Street

It takes a lot of guts to open a new restaurant especially in this economy. It also is risky to open another restaurant in the South Street area where there are so many well-established staples in the area. But if any restaurant has a chance it is SH Kebab House. Located in the old Overtures Restaurant space, SH brings a new twist to the many Middle Eastern restaurants in the area. This time it’s a Turkish themed restaurant. We went to have dinner there and discovered that it was BYOB and we neglected to bring any wine. The owner offered to send a waiter to the Wine and Spirits shop up the street and bring back whatever we wanted! Talk about getting off to a good start. We ordered two appetizers from the list of 13 cold and 5 hot appetizers, most of which are vegetarian. We had delicious babagannush which was thick and lemony with a balance of garlic so you could taste the grilled eggplant. We also had mucver which are pan-fried zucchini patties served with a yogurt sauce. Both appetizers were served with grilled warm pita wedges and were attractively displayed. They also served the pita with butter which I have never seen before. For the main courses we had Sebzeli Guvec which is a vegetable casserole of green beans, eggplant, zucchini, potatoes, carrots and tomatoes in a thick sauce. The dish was perfectly seasoned, rich and served piping hot. We also had the Etli Guvec which was a similar casserole but with braised lamb. Both dishes are served with plain basmati style rice and a spicy red chili flavored rice which was spicy but not overpowering. For dessert I brought home some baklava which was flaky, tender and buttery with just the right mix of honey and nuts. SH have great service, excellent sized portions and a huge variety of meat and vegetarian dishes all at reasonable prices. I hope they succeed because it is a great new addition to the South Street restaurant scene.
