A fan, definitely
I've gotten takeout from Shinju twice in the recent past. The fish was fresh and the maki were delicious--especially the volcano and vegetable-tempura rolls. The appetizers are only fair to good, not great, but it's a sushi restaurant, not some kind of hors d'oeuvres joint. Generally, the prices are very reasonable, although $7 for six pieces of vegetable-tempura maki is something of a ripoff. From what I've heard from highly reliable sources, the service if you actually eat at Shinju is poor, so it would appear that takeout's the way to go.

Love the fusion rolls!!!
I feel like the atmosphere is the only thing that is lacking in this place. The fish is always fresh and/or cooked perfectly. The selection of fusion rolls are to die for! I have full confidence that this restaurant will kick up and hopefully move into a bigger, less cramped environment. That is the only thing I think should improve at Shinju.

Fabulous rolls!!
I have eaten at most sushi joints in town. This is not a TOP end sushi place like Morimoto or Uzi but if you want TOP moderate grade sushi with maybe some of the best sauces in town - this is it. I have eaten here too many times to count and often cannot get in without a reservation. Shinju is DEFINITELY not your ordinary sushi joiint...a solid one notch above most.

Excellent quality and really fair prices for Center City sushi
Shinju is just wonderful. We've only been to the restaurant once - it's warm and cute and friendly, if crowded and loud - but we've ordered home delivery many, many times. I can't speak to their creativity as we stick to the straight stuff, but the fish is so fresh, so delicious, and so beautifully cut, we marvel every time. And the pricing is very fair. And they accept credit cards, which is a big plus for last minute home delivery. Home delivery is a tiny bit slow, but that is not surprising given all the people in Center City who love Shinju's food. The staff are very kind and friendly.

Good, fresh, creative and unique
The best sushi place in philly I have found so far. Replaced my old favorite (Hikaru) after just one visit. Shinju is small and cozy, creatively decorated and friendly - but most of all the sushi is fresh and creative. I recommend the Dancing Vampire - it's delicious, tuna and a sweet and spicy chili sauce over cucumber, asparagus and crunchy and yum..its just good. Their edamame is excellent. The katsu is good, everything there I have had is good.

Awesome sushi byob
I don't know who would say this restaurant was good because it is the absolute best sushi I have had in Philly. It's reasonably priced and you save a lot of money on alcohol with it being a BYOB. They might not chill your white wines sufficiently, but other than that it's a good experience. They had a great variety of rolls and it was all very fresh and delicious! Believe me, I wouldn't normally give any restaurant a 5 unless it was outstanding. It's not a ritzy fancy restaurant or anything but if you're craving good sushi, Shinju will surely hit the spot. The only thing I would advise against is their ice cream. It was sandy (you know, gritty).
