Very good octopus
I have been coming here since 1984. So far every experience has been - good food and friendly staff. I lived in Greece for 2 1/2 years and have found S.S.S. the best Greek food around. The octopus appetizer has always been, after the Retsina, the first thing on the table and it has yet to disappoint.

Best of Greek food!!
I've been going to South St. Souvlaki for over 25 years. The food is consistently wonderful. Tasteless potatotes? They are so flavorful. No salt or pepper needed. The prices are the best around. The appetizers and salad easily make a meal for under $10. I have been looking all over for a place that could even come close in comparison and there is no place. I always get 1/2 babaganoush, 1/2 hummus, and the homemade bread is so good! Nothing I have tried disappointed me. The shrimp dish is outstanding; the stuffed peppers are unbeatable and completely original. I'm drooling. Be back in Philly next week, and I'll be there!

Best Gyros in town
My now husband and i have been coming here since 1999. The quality of the food is authentic and fresh. The mussels are to die for. the sauce in which they are served is a dish by itself with the fresh bread. The owner is friendly and takes great pride in his dishes. the only con is they do not have refills and the new waitresses are a lil short tempered, and impatient.

Real Greek gives real review
I am not sure why Greek girl gave this place such a bad review. I really am Greek and can properly spell Mythos. I've been eating here for 20 years. I go here, rather than the other places because the Greek food (not gyros, that's to appease American palates and need for cheap food you eat quickly) is consistently excellent, and the food and atmosphere closely imitates a real eating experience in a Greek Taverna. There are many other Greek restaurants that are trendier, and glitzier, and significantly more expensive. Pretense does not make it good. Tom does. And he has outlasted all challengers. There is a reason why.

So you think this is great Greek? Really?
So they say that in order to judge an eatery you check out where the natives eat. I am Greek and I am here to tell you that both times I have eaten at South Street the experience was not good. The food - except for the gyros - which is not a chef's product is about the only item on the menu which is palatable. The oven potatoes - tasteless with little to no seasoning. The fries were cold and over cooked. The bread was unremarkable. The chicken souvlaki was mediocre and the portions were meager for the price. All in all if this is the best Greek people have had - well, then they have not had Greek which is a shame. For a phenomenal Greek food experience in terms of food and price we have found Mithos Restaurant in Pa. They also have live music in September on Friday and Saturday nights. The atmosphere is wonderful, it is clean and the food (especially the fresh fish) cannot be beat. In terms of South Street - if the waitress tells you that the olive oil is not good - well, what can you expect from there on?

Delish
Authentic and delicious Greek food and a staple on the ever-changing South Street. They do close twice a year in July and January so keep that in mind. Best lentil soup & hummus around!
