What set Umai apart from other sushi restaurants in the city was their massive specialty rolls for a great price. I've been eating at Umai for well over a year now, and eat there on a pretty frequent basis. The rock shrimp tempura is amazing, and we typically order multiple appetizers of the rock shrimp and calamari salad. When I ordered last night, I was notified that the menu had changed a bit with the rolls coming in a lesser number of pieces, but was assured it was the same amount of sushi for the price. The godzilla roll and spartan roll are our favorites, which came with about 12 pieces for $16-$18; however, the amount per roll was definitely worth the price because they were amazing. When we got the rolls yesterday, there were only 6 pieces of the spartan roll and 7 pieces of the godzilla roll - a substantial difference - for the same price. Although reassured that we'd receive the same amount regardless of the decrease in pieces, there was absolutely no way it was the same amount of sushi for the same price. I'm extremely disappointed in the decision Umai made to decrease their amount per roll because the price/amount is what set them apart from other sushi restaurants in the city tremendously. Minus how delicious the food is and the great quality of service, I doubt I'll eat there again soon. Do any other Umai-goers have similar thoughts?

A friend brought me here and let's just say I fell in love with Umai. Great starters, great rolls and great atmosphere. Oh! it's also a BYO. HIGHLY recommend.

Anyone who loves sushi needs to try the Eternal Sunshine roll. When you read the ingredient list, you think, 'this can't possibly work.' But it does and then some. This is easily the best sushi restaurant in Philadelphia.

The shrimp dumplings are delicious! Overall, I think Umai offers a nice menu selection, however, I think it is a little pricey considering today's economy. I also gave the chef a complement and felt that it wasn't that important to him. In addition, I think that the staff has a low tolerance of children and overall are not that friendly. The shrimp dumplings are really good though. Please try to be a little friendly.

if you have a chance of going soon, have the tuna slider. it is out of this world. the design rolls are so good. it is a little pricey but every now and then its nice to treat yourself.

My girlfriend and I have probably been here at least 20 times in the past 3 years. It has never disappointed. The fish is incredibly fresh and the rolls have an unbelievable explosion of flavor. I have been to many other sushi places in Philly and I really have never had better tasting sushi or a better value. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys sushi. My favorite restaurant in Philadelphia by far.

This place is so good- I am addicted! The Philadelphia roll and beef and tempura shrimp roll are amazing, and the seafood paella is by far the best seafood dish I have ever eaten in Philadelphia.
