Never Again
I am shocked by all of the good reviews for this place. I went here for brunch with some friends and it was disappointing. Maybe it's because we all know food very well and work in restaurants but the menu is very limited. The worst part was the service. Maybe it was because we were a table of 6 and the server knew she was already getting a 20% tip but it took over a half hour for her to even take our order and it was not busy, there were maybe 4 other tables. We waited an hour (oh yes we timed it) for our food, and there was no reason for the kitchen to be busy since there were barely any tables. The final straw was the food. It wasn't horrible but the seasonal fruit was way out of season and did not taste good. The lump crab benedict was bland despite the huge amount of fat that was on the plate, and the "filet" with herb scrambled eggs haha well maybe other customers wouldn't notice but it is not a filet at all....it is a flank steak cut to the shape of a filet, my friend and i asked for it medium rare and we received it medium well at best. I may sound like I'm complaining but I am generally lenient with restaurants because I understand what goes on behind the scenes however Valanni has no consideration for their customers from the service to the lies on the menu. Go to Jones for Brunch instead

Yummo!!
Will I get in trouble for using a Rachel Ray-ism? Anyway, I tell people about this place all the time! Cozy, urban-chic and trendy. All I can remember is a dark and candlelit romantic space. I have very fond memories of some of my favorite things in the world (scallops, spinach, asparagus, mushrooms, if memory serves) piled on top of a volcano of mashed potatoes. It left me with such a warm and cozy feeling that is still with me to this day. I think it's time to go back.

Awesome brunch
I live a few blocks from this place and went to dinner a few weeks ago with my friends. i thought the prices were fair, i expect to pay in the $20 range for a decent entree. we got salmon, seared scallops, and mussels. the menu was small but all of the food was very good. although we didn't drink that night we were very impressed by the drink menu and will be back for drinks. they also had a large tapas appetizer sampler that looked very good so if you did just want drinks and a snack it would be a perfect start to a night on the town for a small group of friends. The best part is I recently went back for brunch, and as a person who has been to pretty much every brunch in the city, this was one of the best. I got the poached eggs served with sauteed lump crab, spinach, tomato, in a cream sauce over foccacia bread with potatoes it was absolutely delicious! my friend got the filet and eggs, and we even split the lemon ricotta pancakes, everything was amazing. this brunch was a little more expensive than most ranging from $8-14 a plate, but the food was high quality and unique, not just your typical eggs and pancakes. the drinks for brunch looked great as well, creative variations on the mimosa, champagne with shots of vodka and various fruit purees--- like mango and apricot-- yum! the restaraunt is small but nicely decorated, the service has been very good both times

Kind of a ripoff
The food is good, but come on... $20 for a plate of 5 cheese ravioli?? They weren't any better than the ones you can buy at the Italian Market, and definitely a step below the more reasonably priced La Viola.

Yummy & beautiful
My husband & I were impressed by our experience at Valanni, during restaurant week. We were able to pick from their entire (fantastic!) menu. The service was spectacular. Our waiter was always available when we needed him, but not overbearing. My husband's entire meal (special corn soup with shrimp, filet mignon, oreo beignents) was a huge hit. I liked both my appetizer (corn arepas - the flavors got a bit muddled) & my dessert (blood orange sorbet - wanted more of a true to nature flavor), but i loved my entree - seared sea scallops with garlic mashed. yum! oh, and their winter sangria was fantastic - way too easy to drink. we'll definitely be going back.
